How each one plays by grade

Analytical Grammar

Grades 4-12

Fourth grade is the ideal start for Level 1, and kids who have studied grammar can place into Level 3. Four High School Reinforcement books keep skills sharp at about one lesson every two weeks.

Winston Grammar

Grades 4-12

Everyone starts with Basic at grade 4 and up. Hold Advanced until grade 7-8 since it assumes secure fundamentals and runs about two years. Winston Word Works can slot between the two.

What parents report

Analytical Grammar

Consistently praised

  • Teaches grammar once and thoroughly instead of every year
  • Diagramming and parsing make sentence structure make sense
  • Efficient, so you finish a level in weeks not a year
  • Clear grading systems for diagrams and writing
  • Strong prep for high school and college writing

Reported as challenges

  • Diagramming can be hard for some kids
  • Grading paraphrases is subjective and takes parent judgment
  • Grammar-only, so you add writing and reading
  • The five-days-a-week pacing is a lot for some

Winston Grammar

Consistently praised

  • Hands-on card system makes grammar active and visual
  • Very little writing, so it is gentle for kids who struggle to write
  • Kids come out able to analyze sentences well
  • Incremental pace with built-in review keeps it low-stress
  • A full year runs under about $50

Reported as challenges

  • Card work adds a step that makes lessons longer
  • Parent has to sit and lead each lesson
  • Grammar-only, so you must add writing
  • Each additional child needs their own consumable student package

Who Analytical Grammar fits

Rigorous, diagram-based grammar done in focused bursts rather than dragged out year after year, and it suits logical kids who like puzzles. Look elsewhere if your child resists diagramming, needs an all-in-one language-arts program, or you want something gentle and untimed.

Who Winston Grammar fits

Fits hands-on and kinesthetic learners, and kids with dyslexia or dysgraphia who do better talking and moving cards than diagramming or writing. Look elsewhere if you want a self-teaching program, a complete language-arts course, or something that keeps an independent worker busy on their own.
