How it shifts by grade

Book 1 starts at third grade and assumes a child can read and transcribe comfortably. Books 2 through 6 climb one grade each to about eighth-grade work, all parent-led dictation. Book 7 is different: ninth and tenth grade, one lesson a week over two years, and the student checks their own answers, so it doesn't need much of you at all.

Additional notes

Seven books replaced the older pairing of Spelling Wisdom with the first edition, and the spelling lessons now sit inside the student book instead of a separate one. Each book covers a single grade rather than two, so a family coming from the first edition places by the placement guide rather than by book number. The series stops at Book 7, and older students move on to The Art of Composition. Passages come from classic literature, poetry, speeches, and ESV Scripture.
