How each one plays by grade
Life of Fred runs 7 grades further than Beast Academy. If you want one program to carry the subject for the long haul, plan on leaving Beast Academy around grade 5 and choosing again.
Beast Academy
Grades 1-5
Level 1 combines the guide and practice into one book. Owners and the publisher both flag the shapes chapter in 3A as a wall worth skipping and returning to. After Level 5 students move to AoPS Prealgebra, usually around ages 11 to 13.
Life of Fred
Grades 1-12
The spine-versus-supplement question splits by level. Most owners never run it as a spine at all; the common pattern is another program four days a week and Fred on the fifth. For the elementary books and Fractions in particular, owners are near unanimous that Fred alone does not cover enough arithmetic. From Pre-Algebra 0 up it stands alone better. There are no grade levels on the spines, so placement takes work.
